Description

Exquisite Antique Brittany (Bretagne) French dining table, circa last quarter 19th century. Bretagne, was once an independent kingdom called Lesser Britain. Brittany is still recognized as one of the six Celtic nations in the world today, as the Celtic language, Breton, is still spoken there and many Celtic traditions still survive today. Drawing on the ornate and symbolic nature of Celtic Art each piece was heavily carved and told a story though its symbolic carvings.

This beautiful table was hand crafted from chestnut with a carved apron of a sheath carved frieze. The table showcases figural legs of men and women holding a sythe and sheath of wheat, and drinking. The legs are connected by a pierced nautical wheel trestle base with floret medallions and 'C' & 'S' scrolled acanthus leaves. The trestle base is designed in an H stretcher configuration leading to blocked feet with traditional carved French medallions over bun feet with casters. A beautiful addition addition to any space.
