Description
19th century (1867) engraving of "Florizel and Perdita" by C.R. Leslie, engraved by Lumb Stocks. "Illustrating act 4, scene 4 of Shakespeare's play (The Winter's Tale), this image shows Perdita, a shepherd's adopted daughter, welcoming two strangers with flowers–seated at right, they are Polixenes and Camillo, the king of Bohemia and a courtier, who have arrived disguised to stop the prince from marrying a shepherd girl (unknown to all, Perdita is, in fact, also of noble birth). Standing next to Perdita, Florizel gazes at his beloved, not yet aware of his father's presence." Two tone champagne giltwood frame with beaded and scallop carved edges; robin's egg blue mat. London Virtue & Co.
"Charles Robert Leslie RA (19 October 1794 – 5 May 1859) was an English genre painter. Leslie was born in London to American parents and raised from the age of five in Philadelphia. Leslie completed his education and afterwards became apprenticed to a bookseller. He left for London in 1811, being admitted as a student of the Royal Academy. At first he essayed high art but he soon discovered his true aptitude and became a painter of cabinet-pictures, dealing, not like those of David Wilkie, with the contemporary life that surrounded him, but with scenes from the great masters of fiction, from Shakespeare and Cervantes, Addison and Molière, Swift, Sterne, Fielding and Smollett."
