Description

Japanese gyotaku print of a red lobster. Signed in plate by the artist. Originally produced by the FishAye Trading Company, beach theme. Re-framed in black and red with stamped Chinoiserie calligraphy.

Provenance:
Estate of J. Frederic Gagel, owner of multiple Thoroughbred race horses that competed in the Narragansett Special and Kentucky Derby. Their family heritage was strongly intertwined with the military having officers in battles dating back to the American Revolution.

“Gyotaku is a traditional form of Japanese art that began over 100 years ago as a way for fishermen to keep a record of the fish they caught. They would apply sumi ink to one side of a freshly caught fish, then cover the fish with rice paper and rub to create an exact image of the fish.”
