All but a few thousand of the nearly 20 million two-cent pieces coined during 1864 carried the enlarged motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and this became standard for the remainder of the series. The taller letters are similar in style to those appearing on the reverse. This issue is very common in circulated grades and in the lower Mint State grades. Only in gem, fully red condition is this coin truly scarce. This date is rich in die-punching varieties, with only a few of them listed in The Cherrypickers' Guide. A much more complete listing will be found in books by Frank Leone and Kevin Flynn. NGC will attribute the better of these under its VarietyPlus Service. Perhaps the most unusual variety for this date features an reverse die that somehow clashed with the obverse of an Indian Head Cent! In all likelihood this resulted from mint workers toying with different dies in an attempt to contrive some fancy for sale to collectors, but it may have been simply an accident during the die set-up process.

Obverse: pair of crossed arrows behind a large striped shield, surrounded by an olive wreath; the words “In God We Trust” on a banner across the top; the year centered along the bottom edge. Reverse: a wreath of wheat tied with a ribbon surrounding the words “2 Cents” at the center; the words “United States of America” along three quarters of the outside edge.
