Description

A fine and impressive Imperial Japanese Meiji Period Dragon Bench. Features high relief carving throughout. The arched and pierced back consists of 3 dragons. In the center is a large and intricate snarling three toed dragon. The other two wind their way from the shoe of the chair back into the arms. Each is meticulously carved showing the head and wings of the dragon perched over a field of clouds with a pearl in their mouth. The pearl represents the beginning of life and is associated with spiritual energy, wisdom, prosperity, power and immortality. This serpent design continues into the seat rest with a serpentine front featuring a Greek key carved edge. The bench is supported by 5 legs and includes a pierced apron of winged dragons within a field of clouds. Each leg smoothly tapers into a scrolled foot. An impressive yet elegant piece for any setting.
