Description
Circa 1960s Miami Carey Italian/ Baroque Revival Wall Mirror with scalloped crown.
On March 12, 1972, the old Miami-Carey plant that stood on Grand Avenue at the railroad tracks was demolished because of a large fire. A large part of Middletown's history was encased in the old plant. It began when the McSherry Implement works moved into the building. In 1895, they began manufacturing bicycles and shortly became the Miami Cycle and Manufacturing Company. After World War I, the Miami Cycle and Manufacturing Company, manufacturers of bicycles and motorcycles, had a difficult time because of the popularity of the automobile. Looking for new work, they formed Miami Cabinet Company in 1923 to manufacture sheet metal products. Its main product became steel bathroom cabinets. The company became Miami Cabinet Division of the Philip Carey Manufacturing Company and moved to Monroe. At the time of this fire, the building was owned by Grand Warehousing, Inc. who claimed that 144,000 square feet of the building was destroyed.
