This George II style English yew wood chest features a spectacular, quad-matched oyster burl yew top surface framed by a bold, wide crossbanded border with alternating light and dark wood block inlays. The vibrant, golden-honey tones display a highly symmetrical grain pattern, highlighting tight clusters of knots and fluid, undulating growth rings centered on the four-way book-matched veneers. Arranged in a traditional configuration, the case holds two half-width frieze drawers directly above three graduated long drawers, each delicately framed with light wood stringing and mounted with cast-brass batwing pulls and matching central escutcheons. The drawer faces showcase a denser, highly concentrated cluster of burr knots running through the center panels, bordered by thick, vibrant crossbanding that displays fine, web-like age crazing throughout the original varnish. This highly figured veneer styling flows seamlessly down the side panels—which showcase beautifully matched burr grain with a decorative central diamond inlay—to the substantial base molding. The entire piece rests on robust, shapely ogee bracket feet clad in heavily patterned oyster burl veneers, Each drawer has hand-cut dovetail joinery with the spacious interiors neatly lined in a patterned, diamond-motif light blue silk fabric.
