Description

This hand-carved white marble sculptural pedestal or table base is designed in the style of the historic Lion Capital of Ashoka. The original is on display at the Sarnath Museum Varanasi in India and symbolizes power, courage, and pride. This example features four highly detailed Asiatic lions standing back-to-back on a thick, circular ring base, facing outward toward the cardinal directions. Each lion is rendered with an open mouth, exposed fangs, a stylized tongue, and a deeply carved, flowing mane that merges seamlessly with the others at the center. The top surface of the piece is formed by the flat crowns of the lions' heads, creating a stable, level support structure ideal for holding a glass or stone table top. The natural white marble displays a smooth, honed texture with subtle gray veining throughout, giving the classical monument-inspired architectural piece an elegant and substantial presence. This sculpture weighs well over 700lbs. Delivery will require additional hands to help off load.
