Description

This antique American Renaissance Revival bookcase or display cabinet is expertly crafted from solid oak, highlighting prominent quartersawn grain patterning and a warm honey-amber finish. The striking upper frieze features an elaborately hand-carved, mischievous North Wind face medallion centered within a continuous band of swirling foliate scrolls and acanthus leaves. The North Wind face is a design that became popular in England in the 18th and 19th century as whimsical furniture began to sweep through towns as it made its way across the Atlantic. The North Wind face is said to be seen whispering from the back furnishings as it blows wooden tendrils of wind from its mouth.

Flanking the two large glass panel doors are prominent, dueling Barley twisted rope columns terminating in stylized leafy capitals and bases. The doors themselves are accented with carved egg-and-dart borders and retain their ornate vintage brass escutcheons, including one drop-ring handle. Opening the cabinet reveals a spacious interior split by a central vertical divider, equipped with adjustable wooden shelving resting on integrated pin supports. The entire substantial structure is anchored by a heavily molded base apron and rests upon four robustly carved lion paw feet, completing its regal, late-19th-century architectural aesthetic.
