Description

Mid century Miss Lititia Thompson Blue Ridge Mountains oil painting on canvas. Marked Happy Birthday Mary 1963 on back.

This picture is a scene of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and was painted in 1963 by Miss Lititia Thompson of Purcellville, Virginia. She painted it on her Grandmother's farm near there. Lititia and my late wife, Mary Price Wells were second cousins. Four of their uncles graduated from the University of Virginia. One was Floyd Price, the other Edgar Price. I do not recall the names of the other two. Floyd Price's room in the dormitory there was the same one that Edgar Allen Poe had resided in while attending the University, many years previously.

Edgar Price died on his estate near San Bernardino, California, about 1949. His wife, (I believe her name was Jessie,) gave the University of Virginia a large Pipe Organ in memory of Edgar Price, and it was installed in the Chapel on the campus in 1952. Mary and I received an invitation to the dedication ceremony for the organ, but were unable to attend on that date. About two weeks later, we visited the University and the man who played the organ during the dedicatory service played on the organ for over an hour for us. Since Sandy and Frank Payson both attended the University of Virginia, and undoubtedly heard the organ many times, perhaps this information will be interesting.
