A very large and impressive resin coated oil painting on canvas of The Lament for Icarus after Herbert James Draper. It depicts the tragic Greek myth where Icarus falls into the sea after flying too close to the sun with wings made of wax and feathers. Icarus is shown surrounded by lamenting nymphs on a rocky shore. The painting won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris World's Fair. The original artwork is currently held in the collection of the Tate Britain museum in London.
Herbert James Draper (1863–1920) was a prominent British Victorian-era Neoclassical painter renowned for his dramatic, romanticized scenes of Greek mythology, vibrant water scenes, and female figures. Born in London, Draper studied at the Royal Academy Schools and travelled through Europe on a scholarship in the late 1880s. He lived and worked in London, where he died of arteriosclerosis at age 56
Condition
Good condition, glossiness seen in pictures is from resin coating reflections and is not paint loss.
