Description

Antique 1933 Birmingham sterling silver pressed powder compact with mirror. Typical round clamshell design simply textured with a pattern of wavy / scalloped lines. No powder puff.

"The firm was originally founded by Benjamin Woolfield in 1786. He was later joined in 1816 by Charles Washington Shirley Deakin, who together with C.W.B Moore traded together as Deakin & Moore from 1848–1879. Both partners had nephews join the firm - Stephen Deakin in 1868 and John Francis in 1879, leading to the renaming as Deakin & Nephew that year. When Charles Deakin retired in 1881, John H Francis came on board and in 1882 the name became Deakin & Francis, as it stands today. Sadly, the Francis line ceased with the death of Captain J H Francis in the First World War. Seven generations later, the firm is today managed by brothers Henry & James Deakin. Both fully qualified, Henry is a Graduate Gemologist and James a Graduate Jeweler Gemologist and Designer. As England’s oldest manufacturing jewellers, the Deakin & Francis factory remains in the same building today as it began in. In recent times the house speciality has become the manufacture of a large range of gentlemen's cufflinks." (Source: Deakin & Francis / 925-1000 / Silver Collection)
