Description

Fine American Empire sofa with striking form and masterful carving, New York; circa 1820s. Made of flamed mahogany with beveled crest rail between "s" scrolled shoulders with high rolled arms featuring acanthus cornucopia, fruit and vegetable motif. The sofa showcases original horse hair stuffing and is supported by heavily carved monopodium feet paw feet with cornucopia. The sofa is signed in pencil along the back seat which can be seen if you remove the back. A perfect candidate for re-upholstery. Can be used as a sofa, or without the back as a stately bench.

The American Empire style is an interpretation of the French Empire style, which was popular in Europe from 1800–1815. American furniture makers were inspired by the French Empire style and adapted it to the tastes of American consumers.

The American Empire period lasted from 1800–1840. The style is considered heavy and dark, and reflects Greek and Roman architectural motifs. It's characterized by curved arms, cabriole legs, and ornate, paw or claw feet.
