Description

Jens Peter Jensen (July 23, 1874, to December 12, 1960), a Danish sculptor, was the son of a cabinetmaker. He initially was apprenticed to a joiner. He attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1894 to 1897. Jensen worked as a master molder for Bing and Grøndahl from 1897 to 1917. While at Bing and Grøndahl, he gained fame for his animal sculptures. Bing and Grøndahl still manufactures some of Jensen’s Art Nouveau figurines. Jensen served as artistic director for Norden, also located in Copenhagen, from 1917 to 1925. In 1925, Jensen changed his last name to Dahl-Jensen. In the same year, he founded Dahl-Jensen Porcelainfabrik in Copenhagen and established a business in Husum, Germany. Jensen exported most of his production to Italy and the United States. Dahl-Jensen was assisted by his wife and later his son Georg Dahl-Jensen. Georg succeeded his father. His son and daughter also worked as artists in the factory. Out of the 400 different models Dahl himself sculpted over half of them. He died in 1960 and the factory closed in 1985.
