Description
A beautiful early 20th century Chinese Coromandel 4 panel black lacquer room divider. One side Features a Chinese village and river landscape with applied and carved bovine over a gold painted backing. A pagoda or temple is at the fore front with geishas, scholars and animals placed throughout the scene. The bottom part of the screen has four smaller panels with cherry blossoms and birds. The other side carries on the bird motif with an intricate hand painted scene of tropical birds and foliage. Vibrantly painted in gold with highlights of red and green for the flowers and birds. The base of the screen has metal capped feet and the panels are joined with brass two way hinges. An amazing screen with great depth and design elements that will add warmth to any space.
Condition
Wear and distressing consistent with age and use. Some hazing to the lacquer as well as missing and chipped paint. The carved side is brittle from drying out with several missing pieces. The pieces sometimes fall off when it is moved. Hinges are slightly loose from being moved around and re-drilled over the past century. Could be restored, or used as is.
