Description

Vintage Cognac Monnet poster by Leonetto Cappiello.

Featuring a sun in the glass, this poster by Cappiello visually represents the warmth of the drink as sunshine bursts out of the glass. The text below ""du soleil dans un verre"", which reads ""a sun in the glass,"" makes the metaphor hard to miss. Holding a huge glass of Cognac Monnet, a flapper girl wearing a red dress is kissing the warmth in a cheerful dancing position.

Not only is this a charming poster, it is also the reason why Cognac Monnet stood out from the hundreds of Cognac producers. Cognac is a variety of brandy named after the town Cognac, France. Cognac is classified by quality grades as well as crus, the geographic areas where the grapes are grown. Cognac Monnet was founded more than 175 years ago by the father of Jean Cognac, the founding father of the European Union. It first became famous because of this early advertising poster by Cappiello, and the company has managed to stay in business until today.

Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was an Italian poster artist who worked in Paris. He is known for modernizing advertising design for the 20th Century. His compositions are uncomplicated and often feature a graceful figure with an oversized rendition of the product against a simple color background. The typography is often minimalized to be as direct and short as possible. This innovation allowed for the advertising to be eye-catching and understood at a moments’ glance. It was ideal for the fast paced travel and attention of busy city life.
