A turn of the 20th century Hitchcock stenciled farmhouse chair. Features a floral berry and leaf / foliate design, ribbed accents and rush seat.

Hitchcock chairs are a true American original. They were designed by one man, intended to be mass-produced, and came to stand for an entire genre of chair. Like the Auto-Maker Ford, Hitchcock put into operation the manufacturing of entire chairs using an assembly line system. These chairs were painted dark (instead of using dark polished woods) and stenciled (instead of carved or inlaid), they were fancy chairs for ordinary people.

This chairs represents a Sheraton style group, with characteristic rectilinear silhouettes, round legs and Neoclassical motifs. It has been updated with American Empire touches, such as a sloped back and curved back rail

Condition

Good overall condition, wear and distressing commensurate with age and use, finish loss to rush, some paint loss / edge wear.
