Description

Haggin & Olin Silks"" & ""Michael Phipps Silks"" by Henry Koehler

a pair of signed limited edition offset lithograph after the original painting by Henry Koehler. (American, b. 1927) The Colors of Michael G. Phipps depicts a jockey walking away from the viewer carrying his saddle and whip. He wears the racing silks of Michael G. Phipps consisting of a blue jacket with yellow sleeves and diagonal sash. The sketchy outlines and loose washes of color create an informal feel and capture a moment in a race rider’s day. The print that features two jockeys is titled, Haggin & Olin Silks from the Fleur De Lis Collection. The prints are early in the limited series 61/1500 and is signed in pencil in the lower right corner. Each is matted and framed.

A sporting artist who lives in Southampton, New York, Henry Koehler was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated from Yale University, and shortly after that had illustrations published by The New Yorker, Town and Country, and Sports Illustrated.

His first exhibition was in 1961, and since then he has exhibited in over 60 venues in London, Paris, Dublin, Johannesburg and the United States. His works are in the collections of the National Racing Museum in Saratoga and the National Horse Racing Museum in Newmarket.

He has painted several commission portraits of well-known thoroughbreds but prefers genre pieces depicting horse-racing, polo games, and hunting in the field with horses. He also does studies of jockey figures before and after their race; sensitive studies of jockeys before and after racing.

An July-October 2003 exhibition, Elegant Impressions of Turf and Field, was held at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, Saratoga Springs.
