Description

19th century American Empire mahogany sofa or settee. Features a high back leading to sloped figural delphin (dolphin) arms over flared legs. Upholstered in striped blue and teal with removable cushion. Delphin is a Latin word and root meaning dolphin (also delphinus) Delphin, Greek mythlogical sea god, the leader of the dolphins, poseidon placed him in the sky as the constellation Delphinus. Dolphins were the messengers of Poseidon, the "god" of the seas. – Once, some pirates captured the god Bacchus or Dionysus who confused him with a Prince, with the intention to ask for ransom. Dionysus raged and turned the ship's oars into snakes, which frightened the pirates and made them jump into the sea. Just in case you wanted to know.
