Description

Heywood Brothers & Co. Corner Chair

C.1870s

A fine example of Victorian craftsmanship. Woven and braided wicker with flared supports. The lower tier works perfectly as an arm rest. The chair seat is rattan and covered with a floral cushion. Marked Heywood Brothers & Co. on green tag beneath.

Heywood Brothers was established in 1826 producing wicker and rattan furniture. As these pieces increased in popularity they became rivals with the Wakefield Company, which opened in 1855. In 1897 the companies merged as Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Company, which was changed in 1921 to Heywood-Wakefield that everyone is familiar with today.
