Description

A gorgeous William & Mary style buffet or sideboard by Henry C. Steul & Sons out of Buffalo, New York.

Henry Christian Steul was born in Buffalo in 1859. He and his brother Conrad became partners in the furniture business, Steul Bros., in 1882. Conrad died in 1888 and Henry found another partner, Frank H. Thuman, in 1890. Their business incorporated in 1904 as Steul & Thuman, Inc. Changing names once more in 1920, to become Henry C. Steul & Sons. By 1937 they were no longer in business.

This beautiful reproduction was made in the 1920's as a part of their William & Mary dining room set. William & Mary style was originally designed between 1700-1725. A transitional style between Queen Anne and Mannerist furniture. Focusing on straight lines, curves and elaborate wood carving and turning.

Made from walnut with an elegant presence. The front shows a matchbook veneered central drawer framed in gadrooning above a serpentine apron. This is flanked by two outer cabinets and below a long main drawer with three compartments. Each drawer displays a crotch walnut front with burled accents and brass hardware. Top is smooth with a sleek apron along the back. Legs are turned and connected by a neat framework of stretchers. The perfect statement for any space.
