Description

Joseph Wallace King (1911 - 1996)

A painter and magazine illustrator, Joseph Wallace King lived in Winston-Salem, North Carolina but was active internationally as well as in other parts of the United States. Some of his paintings were signed as Vinciata including portraits of Lorenzo de Medici, President Richard Nixon, Queen Elizabeth and the Saudi Royal Family.

He studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC and also in France and Italy. After his death, he left Elon College in North Carolina 86 of his paintings. He had never attended the school nor taught there, but had many friends there and was a strong supporter of education.

As a resident of Winston-Salem, he served in the state legislature from 1950 to 1952, but later said that his political career was "a flop" as his proposals to build highway rest stops and sell personalized licensed plates did not get approved. "Several years ago, he drew national attention by hiring a woman to wear a flesh-colored bodysuit and re-enact Lady Godiva's ride to protest a proposed increase in Winston-Salem property taxes (victorian.fortunecity)
