Description

A spectacular French Mantel Clock with dated works marked 1858. The works Are Marked V & E with a Figured Bee between the two letters. The bell is inscribed Moreau, so the Clio figure may have been done By Auguste Moreau. The figure is Clio, the Muse of History. She rests at the center on top of a column, arms over a book with foliate in her hands. Features a winged and scrolled caryatid support on the right side of the column. The clock and works are housed within the column. The slate face with Roman numerals is marked Le Curieux & Aucerre. The works and sculptural portion of the clock are mounted to a tiered plinth base, ornately engraved along the front and features gargoyle knockers along the sides. The base is raised over scrolled paw feet. A highly artisan stylized clock that will make a nice addition to any space.
