Description

Circa 1870's engraving titled "Highland Music" by Sir Edwin Landseer, engraved by Henry S. Beckwith, published by London, Virtue & Co, Ltd. Shows a Scottish man seated in a cottage, playing Highland pipes to a group of dogs. Beveled giltwood frame; dark gray mat.

"Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (7 March 1802 – 1 October 1873) was an English painter and sculptor, well known for his paintings of animals – particularly horses, dogs, and stags. "The Englishman Henry S Beckwith initially found fame with his engravings of various Landseer paintings. In around 1842 he moved to the United States where he worked with Alfred Jones for about a year. Beckwith's name is linked to the American Bank Note Company (ABNC), the Continental Bank Note Company, and the Homer Lee Bank Note Company as well. While the vast bulk of his work consists of banknotes, he did engrave a single stamp for the ABNC: the 2c of the 1865 Newfoundland definitive set, depicting an Atlantic cod. Henry S.
