The Gunlocke Company's history in Wayland, New York begins in 1902 when William H. Gunlocke and four other wood furniture experts buy a vacant factory. The company, originally called the W.H. Gunlocke Chair Company, specializes in seating for homes, libraries, and lounges. By 1904, the company had 40 employees and has since expanded many times. In 1911, the company expands its product line to include office seating. In 1949, the company acquired the Johnson name and chair designs to continue the Johnson business while offering a competing line.
