Original Oil attributed to George Simmons a frontier painter circa mid 1800s. A gorgeous country landscape of figures near the water mill.
Born in Streeter, IL on January 22, 1834. George Simons moved to Council Bluffs, IA at an early age. By 1854 he was active as a painter and photographer of historical subjects of Iowa and eastern Nebraska, such as Pawnee villages, Mormon caravans, trading posts, and steamboat landings.
During the Civil War he was with the 29th Iowa Volunteers for four years. About 1900 he retired to California and settled in Long Beach where he remained until his demise on October 7, 1917.
